☑ After the final inspection/walk through for the property take detailed photos to document condition of the space.
☑ Local move – Notify utilities and service companies to maintain seamless billing and service.
☑ Out of area move – Cancel utilities, return equipment, arrange deposit returns, order meter readings, terminate interior/exterior home service providers, empty safe deposit box.
☑ Forward or obtain all medical, dental and veterinary records, fill prescriptions before moving.
☑ Secure personal and valuable items such as birth records, Social Security card, jewelry, special photo albums, coins, etc.
☑ School registration arrangements in advance – bring birth records, test documents, teacher IEP’s.
☑ Create master list of local/former contacts, file “mail forwarding” request, leave new address with owner of old property if possible.
☑ Collect and leave remotes, garage/gate/security codes, keys, and technical manuals.
☑ If particular items are needed immediately upon arrival, pull them aside and pack them last on truck (lamps, beds/mattresses, appliances, toys, curtains/blinds, personal care items etc.)
☑ First Day Box for new home: pack all types of paper products, cleaning supplies, hand brush and dustpan, trash bags, hand soap/wipes, basic toolbox, measuring tape, scissors, tape, markers, clipboard for movers paperwork, pens, notepaper and envelopes, misc. light bulbs, flashlight and extra batteries, sealable plastic bags both large and small.
☑ First Night Box for new home: night lights, towels/bath mat, sheets/mattress cover/pillows/blankets, night lights, facial tissues/TP, inflatable mattresses.
☑ Pets in transit – pack more food than expected, water bowls, collars with identity tags/leash/halter, favorite bedding/pet bed and toys, medications, plastic bags and scooper, paper towels, lint remover, and umbrella.
☑ Pets first night – identify feeding area for consistency. Restricting roaming area to cage, small room or using dog gates can create sense of security. Use treats to reinforce positive behavior in new environment.
